Register now for VPC’s Fall Meeting!

Registration is now open for the VPC Fall Meeting, scheduled for Oct. 16 at Virginia Press Association in Richmond.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m. at VPA, located at 11529 Nuckols Rd, Glen Allen. The first speaker, Jon Newman, owner of The Hodges Partnership, will conduct a workshop from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. called PR is Spelled EOP on earned, owned and paid media.

Jon’s 30-plus year career includes his years as a working journalist running TV newsrooms in Virginia and Tennessee. His transition to public relations began at The Martin Agency where he oversaw national media relations efforts for hundreds of clients who wanted to see themselves on Oprah or in The New York Times or Wall Street Journal. For the last 13 years he and Josh Dare have piloted The Hodges Partnership, a full-service PR firm in Richmond. There they have witnessed the shift from classic PR and media relations to social media and now to content marketing.

The world of PR is changing dramatically. On one side the media world is shrinking making media relations more difficult to practice effectively. On the other new technologies are opening up new possibilities daily for PR pros to reach their audiences directly with their clients’ messages. This presentation will explore the challenges and opportunities facing practitioners and how it will continue to force changes in the industry.

Our fall meeting and luncheon will be from 1-3 p.m. and will include the presentation of the 2015 Agnes Cooke Scholarship to Katie Shepherd and the Newsmaker of the Year Beth Macy, author of the award-winning “Factory Man: How One Furniture Maker Battled Offshoring, Stayed Local—and Helped Save an American Town.”

From 4-5 p.m., there will be an optional post-meeting group tour of “The Story of Virginia” at the Virginia Historical Society, then dinner as a group (paid on your own) at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
