Alternative News Outlets Focus on Filling Gaps in Traditional Media<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

News today is delivered on many platforms, including in non-traditional formats known as alternative news outlets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robert Zullo, editor of the Virginia Mercury, and Jonathan\nSpiers, senior reporter and assistant editor at Richmond BizSense, shared\ninsights with VPC members about the alternative news outlets they work for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe try to delve deeper into topics that other outlets cover\nat the highest level,\u201d Zullo said. \u201cWe have found that there is a readership\nfor explanatory journalism, and with those stories there is a longer shelf life\nthan just the news of the day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For BizSense, the focus in on insider business info \u2014\neverything from property transfers to the latest brewery opening to higher\neducation operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur focus is the business news of the day,\u201d Spiers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The circulation of these publications does not rival more\ntraditional media, and it\u2019s not meant to. Both of these sources rely on\ndedicated, loyal followers, most of whom get their news first from the outlets\ne-newsletters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEmail is really our driver and the starting point for most\nreaders, who then come to our website and discover other stories of interest to\nthem,\u201d Spiers said. \u201cWe don\u2019t try to compete in the same way as the paper of\nrecord.
