Managing Our Digital Footprint<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOn the Internet we are all hoarders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That point was shared in a CNN article<\/a>and told to VPC members by Crista LaPrade, digital asset management and preservation administrator at the University of Richmond\u2019s Boatwright Memorial Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDigital was supposed to make our lives easier and eliminate paper,\u201d LaPrade said. \u201cBut digital allows us to keep everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are inundated with digital content and many people simply try to collect and keep everything, or at least as much as possible. \u201cThis is not sustainable,\u201d she said as audience members nodded in agreement, eagerly waiting to learn how to organize their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LaPrade, though, did not have easy answers. She said it would require work. \u201cConsider what is important to you to archive,\u201d she said. \u201cThe first step is determining what is valuable to you individually.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever you determine to archive, you should have a minimum of at least two copies. \u201cHaving a single copy of anything digital is never a good thing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LaPrade modified tidying guru Marie Kondo\u2019s rules to get started. They include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n
