Danica Roem Named Newsmaker of the Year

in Events

Come to the fall meeting Oct. 13 in Central Virginia to hear Virginia Democratic Delegate Danica Roem, VPC’s 2018 Newsmaker of the Year. Roem made headlines throughout Virginia and the nation last November with her Prince William County election to the Virginia General Assembly. The nation’s only openly transgender person in a state legislature, Roem defeated longtime incumbent Republican Robert Marshall. Marshall’s anti-LGBTQ rhetoric during the campaign period could not be dismissed; Roem won by focusing on her constituents’ concerns about traffic congestion on Route 28. She credits her preparation for public office to her past experience as a journalist.

Roem is featured in the Aug. 6/Aug. 13 issue of TIME, in a roundup of “31 People Who Are Reshaping the South”: http://time.com/5349036/people-changing-the-south/

Details of the October event will appear in future issues of Galley Pruf and here on the VPC website. Stay tuned!
