Upcoming vote on dues increase
At their meeting just before our Lightning Talks on Oct. 5, the board voted to approve a modest dues increase — the first in about 10 years.
Members will be given the option to electronically vote on this dues increase, so keep an eye out for this opportunity in your inbox.
The VPC board agreed on this important step to balance our budget, which the bylaws require. We want to ensure we have funds to provide the services that you, our members, expect. VPC expenses include the annual awards competition, website hosting and maintenance, PayPal fees, membership in the Virginia Coalition of Open Government, registration with the State Corporation Commission, and outlays for the Communicator of Achievement and Newsmaker of the Year awards.
VPC’s sole income sources are membership dues and contest fees, which fluctuate with the size of the organization and the number of annual contest entries.
The proposed new Virginia dues:
Professional: $35 ($6 increase)
Retired: $15 ($3 increase)
Student: $20 ($15 increase; our students are typically on scholarship, and the VPW Foundation covers the cost of their memberships)
The NFPW dues, set by the NFPW board, will increase by $1. Current NFPW figures are: professional, $79; retired, $30 and student, $25.
