Virginia Professional Communicators

Nominations due Jan. 15 for 2025 Newsmaker of the Year

The annual Virginia Professional Communicator’s Newsmaker Award is given to a nominee who has made significant news in the past year or throughout their career. The nominee should be either from an under-represented group, such as women, minorities, LGBT persons or people with disabilities, OR someone who has served an under-represented group through their vocation. The nominee will be judged on the basis of newsworthiness, public service, personal sacrifice, risk-taking and/or inspiration to others. The nominee must either live in Virginia or have spent part of their life in Virginia, and the recipient must be available to accept the award in person and to make remarks at our VPC spring meeting. Only VPC members may nominate candidates for Newsmaker.

Nominators must submit a rationale for their nominees, which should include:

  • Brief statement as to why the nominator feels the nominee deserves the award;
  • Biography of the nominee;
  • Names of news-outlets and dates/URLs or news clips showing how and where the nominee made news during the past year;
  • Describe ways in which the nominee has helped an underserved community.

Don’t delay!  Nominations are due Jan. 15, 2025, and can be submitted in writing electronically or by postal mail.

Please email your nomination, including copies, scans and links, to VPC co-Presidents Tracy Perkins at tracy.perkins@jyf.virginia.gov and Cora Perkins at cora.lynn.perk@gmail.com. For questions and details about where and how to send nominations via postal mail, please email Tracy and Cora.
